Principal Message to Parents and Students:

I hope this letter finds you and your family in good health.  Students enrolled in our schools are required to meet specific immunization requirements. Official proof of immunizations must be provided to school when updated shots are given to your child or risk being excluded. As we approach the flu season, we would like to emphasize the importance of influenza vaccination for your child's well-being, ability to attend school, and the health of our school community.

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. The influenza vaccine remains an annual requirement, with a due date of December 1. Protection takes about two weeks to develop after vaccination. The December 1 due date ensures that the immunization is completed before the winter school break, when families travel and congregate with friends and other family members, increasing the potential for transmitting disease-causing organisms and illness.

Parents will receive an exclusion letter for their student notifying them their student will not be permitted to attend school after the due date of Monday, December 2, 2024, until an updated record is received or an appointment date has been provided. Please note that DoDEA will not exclude students if due to a vaccine shortage, or the medical treatment facility (MTF) cannot provide the shot by December 1. However, students must comply with requirements once the influenza vaccine becomes available again.

If you choose not to vaccinate your child for any reason, we request that you contact the School Nurse to request an exemption form. The School Nurse will provide the parents with information regarding the vaccine’s protective benefits. This form and the vaccine information may be given to the parent in person or via email. DoDEA only recognizes medical and religious exemptions. Medical exemptions that are temporary require a signature from a physician. Religious exemptions are signed by the parent/guardian/sponsor for the student adherent to a religious belief as opposed to immunizations and must be renewed annually. In the event of an outbreak, your student will not be able to come to school or participate in any school, sports, or community activities for the duration of the outbreak. Please speak with your school nurse if you feel this is what is best for your child.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a healthy and safe school environment for all our students. If you have any questions or need further information regarding flu vaccination, please do not hesitate to contact our school nurse or the school administration. Let us work together to keep our school community healthy this flu season.

Regards,

Mary Mullins, Principal
